Natural acid resistance
About 100 million lactic acid bacteria (per milliliter of vaginal fluid) guard the vaginal balance. The beneficial and desired lactic acid bacteria actively produce lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In this acidic and antibiotic environment, other, unwanted pathogens are kept in check, thus reliably protecting the vagina from infections.
Natural vaginal health during menopause
The natural protective acid layer in the vagina is based on a fairly acidic environment. The natural acid level in a healthy vagina has a pH value of 3.8–4.5. If this acid level increases, unwanted pathogens can multiply, potentially leading to vaginal inflammation or infection.
The vaginal balance can be supported by a suitable diet (e.g., probiotics or avoiding excessive carbohydrate consumption) and sufficient hydration with healthy beverages like water or tea. If risk factors are present or there is a tendency towards vaginal inflammation, it can be restored with appropriate measures.
If bacteria cause a vaginal infection, it is referred to as bacterial vaginosis or colpitis. When fungi, usually yeast, colonize the area, it is called a vaginal yeast infection (medically known as mycosis or candidiasis).

Bacterial vaginosis or vaginal yeast infection? How to recognize the difference.

To prevent vaginal infections in those prone to them or to strengthen the natural vaginal defense after a previous infection, a course of acidifying agents is recommended. For women in menopause with accompanying vaginal dryness as a possible cause, combining with moisturizing agents is advisable.
