Vaginal dryness is a relatively common and generally uncomfortable phenomenon during menopause. However, according to recent surveys, only half of all women in menopause take measures to support their vaginal balance and well-being.

THE VAGINAL HARMONY

Vaginal moisture and vaginal dryness

Natural vaginal moisture is essential for vaginal harmony, as it keeps the inner vagina supple and supports the vaginal acid protection against unwanted pathogens. Additionally, the constant slight moisture promotes the vagina’s natural self-cleaning process. This slight moisture exists independently of sexual arousal. Vaginal dryness during menopause occurs when this natural vaginal moisture decreases, usually due to hormonal changes.

Natural vaginal health during menopause

About half of all women going through menopause experience vaginal dryness. As female hormones decrease, the growing lack of estrogen – often called the beauty hormone – also affects the skin. Especially on the face, skin aging becomes noticeable through thinning and moisture loss.

Naturally, the vaginal mucous membranes also become thinner. The medical term for this is vaginal atrophy. The mucous membranes lose their natural moisture, become more sensitive, are easily irritated, and may burn or itch.

Vaginal dryness during menopause is not a fate to be accepted. Any form of treatment – whether using a hormone-free or hormone-based vaginal product – can alleviate the vaginal symptoms of dryness, according to a remarkable clinical study. The choice of treatment – whether with or without hormones – should be based on the individual preferences of the patient. The important thing is that vaginal dryness is treated at all.1

A proven way to alleviate these discomforts is the use of vaginal moisturizers that restore the necessary moisture to dry mucous membranes. Since the sensitive mucous membranes lack a protective layer like normal skin, they are much more prone to damage, irritation, and penetration by synthetic chemicals. Therefore, especially for long-term use, it is crucial that vaginal products are as natural and hormone-free as possible and do not contain harmful substances.

OUR TIP: What to look for in a vaginal gel

Vaginal moisturisers are an effective treatment option for vaginal dryness, especially for women who would prefer to stay away from the use of hormonal preparations and are looking for a natural, hormone-free remedy.

Vaginal moisturisers reduce friction with thin and dry vaginal tissue, preventing unpleasant burning and itching sensations, as well as infections. If you are suffering from typical menopausal vaginal dryness, hormone-free vaginal gels are therefore always worth a try if you want to alleviate this unpleasant side effect of the menopause.

Not all vaginal medications are the same. The products you can buy in the shops have major differences that you should be aware of.
